The Meaning of Teej
Teej is primarily a Hindu festival celebrated by Nepali women, honoring the union of the goddess ‘Parvati’ and Lord ‘Shiva’. It is a time for women to pray for the well-being of their husbands, families, and their own health and happiness. Unmarried women often join in, praying for a loving and kind life partner.
But Teej is more than a religious observance—it is also a celebration of ‘womanhood, sisterhood, and cultural heritage’. For many, it is the one time of the year when women from all walks of life come together, dressed in their finest, to sing, dance, and share stories.
The Traditions
Teej spans three days, each with its own customs:
